Needing mom

6 a.m. my alarm goes off. Time to get up. I need to get the kids up and off to school. Then I have to race downtown to try and accomplish as much as I can before having to leave to pick them up from school.

6:05 a.m. Maddy comes into the room, awakening on her own. She is coughing and states, "my throat hurts".

My first thought is, "please, not today...I have a million things that I need to accomplish at work and I am already short on time". I feel her forehead...not hot, cool to the touch. I ask if she feels well enough to try and go to school.

Hesitantly she said, "yes". I gave her my cell phone number and work number and told her to call if she needed me.

We all got ready and I dropped them off at school. I felt bad knowing that she wasn't feeling the best but knew I needed to get downtown. All the way to work she stayed in my mind, thinking that I should have never let her go to school not feeling well, but she was a trooper.

I got to work and started completing what seemed like an endless amount of tasks, when the phone ran...

It was the school. The nurse was on the other end and said that Maddy had come down to the nurse's office crying and stating that her tummy hurt. I said I would be right there and hung up. In that instance nothing else matters, not the stacks of paperwork requiring my attention, not the meetings I needed to attend, and certainly not the pages on my pager going off.

I gathered up what I could in 30 seconds and went to find my boss. Fortunately, I have a very understanding boss that understands when you have to leave. I told her that Maddy is sick at school and I needed to pick her up. I have my work and will be at home.

When I got to school I spoke with the nurse. Maddy immediately started to cry upon seeing me. Then looked at me and said, "Thanks mom for picking me up, I feel much better now". My heart was broken, it took a 6 year old to make me realize that I needed to slow down.

We went to the doctor and found her rapid strep negative. On the way home we got her a sprite (cause she said that it would make her feel better...yeah right!!) and make her a special spot on the couch.

And now that she is feeling better and resting...I can get to work!
